Jo King has had a varied and exciting career in the fascinating world of performance art. Beginning in London's cabaret clubs in the 1970s as a burlesque artiste, she has since entertained audiences throughout Europe and the U.S. with a variety of her glamorous, sexy, tongue-in-cheek performances.
In 2000, Jo formed the London School of Striptease and the London Academy of Burlesque, the very first schools of their kind in Europe. Why? … “I want women, all women, to feel fabulous about themselves, regardless of age, shape or dancing ability." By teaching women her craft, she has already shown more than 10,000 women how to gain confidence in their bodies, express the essence of their sensuality and awaken their inner showgirls.
Jo is an ambassador for the industry, giving her candid views in the press and on many radio and TV shows. Considered an expert in her field, she is often hired to teach and choreograph actresses and dancers for film, television and stage work. In 2005 she choreographed Miss Immodesty Blaize’s original, highly acclaimed, reverse striptease act, for her West End show. In 2006 she choreographed Miss Polly Rae’s original signature burlesque act and all her solo burlesque acts to follow. Many of the new burlesquers, such as The Teasemaids, Crimson Skye, Honey Lulu, Lil’ Miss Chievous and Kiki Kaboom, have all benefited from Jo’s inimitable choreographic skills and artistic direction.
Triumphantly, 2008 marked Jo King’s 30th year in the burlesque industry. In June 2008, as Goodtime Mama Jojo, she performed at the Burlesque Hall of Fame’s 50th Annual Reunion Showcase in Las Vegas, where she was recognised as a British burlesque legend.
The keys to her success are her passion for her work, her infectious enthusiasm for life and her unique ability to convey that being female truly is fabulous!
